Providence Colleges track and arena land national accolades

Two athletic facilities at a university near Warwick have received national recognition for their construction and design.

The American Sport Builders Association (ASBA) has named Providence College’s Ray Treacy Track, which is located on Hendricken Field, the Track & Field Facility of the Year.

In addition to this, the magazine American School & University praised the college’s Schneider hockey arena for its “Outstanding Design” – a fact that could find its way into future brochure and poster printing designs, when the college hopes to attract promising athletes from Warwick, Cranston, and other areas of Rhode Island.

Speaking about the accolades, the university’s athletics director, Bob Driscoll, said the school is honored to receive the recognition for its facilities. Further, he said the college is proud of the track and arena, and all other improvements implemented over the last decade that have been made possible through the support of President Rev. Brian Shanley and various donors.

One of several running sites highlighted by the ASBA, Ray Treacy Track was named in honor of the college’s longtime head coach and was built in the fall of 2013.

Schneider Arena, which opened in 1973, was named after Herman D. Schneider, who launched the college’s move into university-level hockey. Today, the facility – which underwent extensive renovations in 2013 – is home to both men’s and women’s ice hockey programs.
