The City of Warwick Department of Human Services and the Buttonwood Community Center are encouraging area residents to consider giving the gift of an eye exam. Donate $25 to EyeCare America and it will provide for one free eye exam for a senior.
EyeCare America is a program of the Foundation of the American Academy of Ophthalmology. The program has been providing free eye exams since 1985 when it was known as the National Eye Care Project, and has helped over 2,000 Rhode Island residents receive free eye exams. In order to qualify for the free exam, you must be a US citizen over 65, you must have not seen an eye doctor in 3 years and not have any insurance that covers eye care. In addition, those who are at risk for glaucoma can receive a free glaucoma exam at any age. Over 7,000 ophthalmologists throughout the US volunteer to work with the program. EyeCare America also provides information about the various eye diseases and treatment to the general public.
If you have a senior who is hard to buy for or who you know is letting their health care slip because of the lack of money, an eye exam will show that you care about that person. Of course, it is hard to wrap such a gift. What you could do is to buy or create a postcard. Printing information about the gift on the card, and maybe including some local information about Warwick for those who live out of town, and wrapping it will give them something to place under their Christmas tree.
