Those who reside in Providence and the rest of the state are eligible to receive one of 100 free Rhode Island state flags the state will be giving away to honor the holiday.
Flags may be ordered online and will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis from the State House Visitor’s Center and Gift Shop online. A Rhode Island Mailing address is required to qualify.
In a statement, Gregg M. Amore, Rhode Island secretary of state, said:
“Rhode Island has always led the way with a strong independent spirit, and Rhode Islanders should be proud that we were the first colony to separate ourselves from British rule. Now, I’m encouraging Rhode Islanders to demonstrate that pride by displaying a state flag in recognition of Rhode Island Independence Day.”
Among the ways government agencies disperse information about events like this is through the use of poster printing services.
The Act of Renunciation, which the Rhode Island General Assembly passed in 1776, declared the then colony’s independence from Great Britain. That original document is still in possession of the Rhode Island Department of State.
Residents are invited to share a photo of their Rhode Island flag display during May on social media.Get a Free Quote for Mailing
