Quakertown program to add extra joy to holiday season

While many look to the holidays with great anticipation, for Quakertown’s disadvantaged families, it can be a different story. Local law enforcement has organized a program that can help, and the whole community can also join in and make a difference.

The Shop with a Cop program, which began back in 2011, will be celebrating its 9th year. Both Quakertown police and members from other local departments will be participating, and it is intended for kids who are in elementary school.

Whether it is due to financial hardship, military deployment, homelessness or other difficulties, this initiative's simple goal is to put a smile on the faces of area kids. Businesses and individuals have all contributed to the effort, and the children who take part will each be issued a gift card so they can experience the pleasure of choosing gifts for their family. The law enforcement personnel who help to keep the program running do so on a volunteer basis, and are taking time out of their busy schedule to do so.

This sort of event depends upon the support of the public and private sectors to meet its goals. Stationery printers can provide blank Holiday Cards to be filled out by the children who participate and included with each of the gifts they give.

This year’s Shop with a Cop will be hitting the stores on December 12. The final date for Quakertown families to submit an application is next Friday, November 29. The form to do so can be found on the borough’s website.
