Bruce Graham’s play ‘Rizzo’, on show in Philadelphia next month, explores the life and career of a local public figure, jumping through time to look at the way he governed, the issues he faced, and his complex personality.
Frank Rizzo started as a cop on the beat, rose to become Police Commissioner, and was finally elected Philadelphia’s mayor, a position he held from 1972 to 1980. In his stormy career, he made as many enemies as he did friends, and remains controversial to this day, 25 years after his death.
The upcoming production, which will no doubt appeal to Glenside theatergoers, is directed by Joe Canuso, who says the subject matter is relevant to what is going on in the nation today, as people continue to struggle with class warfare, economic instability, racial unrest, and economic inequality. Canuso believes that watching ‘Rizzo’, particularly as the presidential election looms, can help people look at history, learn from their mistakes, and move forward.
The Philadelphia Theatre Company, a popular regional theater, was founded in 1974. It focuses on developing, producing, and presenting works that speak to the American experience.
‘Rizzo’ opens the Philadelphia Theatre Company’s season, and reunites the original cast who originally performed the work at Theatre Exile. The show runs September 23 to October 16, 2016.
