Very much a story for the holidays, ‘Adventures in Toyland’ is coming to the Storybook Musical Theatre, promising fun for audience members of all ages.
Patricia Goldberg, the artistic director of the Storybook, wrote and is directing the show, with Jeff Reim providing music and lyrics. The production is the story of a young boy who learns to confront his fears, and gains confidence with the help of four toys who come to life.
The play begins one night as protagonist Michael wakes from a nightmare and runs to his playroom, where he can cry without anyone hearing him. Princess Ballerina Belle, Pirate Pete, Captain Combat, and Rag Doll do hear him, however, and decide to help. They come to life and encourage him to learn to use the power of his imagination to face his anxieties and discover new places, without ever leaving the playroom.
The toys’ journey sees them head to the African jungles, rocket to the moon, sail the seas, and join in an auto race. Producers of shows like this could distribute Business Cards with contact information for the theater.
The production opens this Wednesday, December 12, and runs through December 30, at the Gratz College Theater in Melrose Park, a short drive from Glenside. There are no shows on December 15, 16, 17, 24, or 25.
