Glenside park to host butterfly festival

Cheltenham Township is hosting its first Monarch Festival in Glenside next month.

The festival is intended to educate the public about the importance of monarch butterflies and other pollinators, and to celebrate the new pollinator garden set to open in Grove Park. Planting is currently in progress and will be completed before the festival. The pollinator habitat will follow best practices from the Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation, starting with growing flowers that attract pollinators.

Attendees can speak with representatives from several environmental organizations and participate in different activities. Local artist Rebecca Schultz will lead a craft workshop. The Parks and Recreation department is hosting a scavenger hunt, and a face painter will be available. The Glenside Library will be hosting a story time session at noon. Kids and their families can listen to pollinator-themed stories like Milkweed for Monarchs by Christine Van Zandt and Look to the Skies by Nicola Edwards.

The Environmental Advisory Council will be giving away seeds and providing information about pollinator-friendly plants. Friends of Grove Park, the Xerces Society and the Tookany/Tacony-Frankford Watershed Partnership will have information tables set up. Organizations often use brochure printing services to share information about their programs at community events.

The Monarch Festival will take place on Saturday, September 14 from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm at Grove Park in Glenside.
