Early days
Cheltenham Township dates back to 1682, when it was established as a portion of Philadelphia County. Richard Wall and Tobias - better known as Toby - Leech are considered to be the Founding Fathers of the township, since both were instrumental in the growth of the community. Leech, a businessman, established a corn mill, baking ovens, and a tannery. Leech and Wall, along with Humphrey Morrey, were known as “First Purchasers,” since they received deeds to small parcels of land in the new township.
Early industrial development came primarily in the form of mills, since the Tookany Creek's waters were available to power them. Richard Dungworth built the first gristmill in the township in 1690, and other soon followed. As the mills appeared, towns grew up beside them. Today the mills are mostly gone, but their history lives on, and there are two historic districts in the township.
