Folk singers coming to Glenside

Two legends of folk music are coming to Glenside.

Arlo Guthrie and Judy Collins will be at the Keswick as part of the “Alice's Restaurant—Back by Popular Demand” Tour that celebrates the 50th anniversary of “Alice's Restaurant,” the film that starred Arlo as himself. The movie was directed by the late Arthur Penn, who also directed the groundbreaking “Bonnie and Clyde.”

Guthrie is the son of another folk legend, Woodie Guthrie, and has been carrying on his father's tradition of political protest and social activism. A review of a performance noted that he is not merely resting on his accomplishments, and that the concert:

“ . . .went well beyond an oldies act, and showed a classic like Arlo Guthrie still has new musical gifts to impart.”

Singer/songwriter Judy Collins is a veteran performer who admired and was inspired by none other than Woodie Guthrie. Her hits include “Both Sides Now,” “Chelsea Morning,” and in particular, “Send in the Clowns” from the musical “A Little Night Music.” She was nominated for a Grammy for her version of the Sondheim tune, which won Song of the Year.

A review of Collins in concert noted that:

“Collins’ voice . . . is largely impeccable and what she can still do with it remains staggering.”

Arlo Guthrie and Judy Collins will be at the Keswick Theatre on June 27, at 8.00 pm, with the doors opening at 7.00 pm. Poster printing can create attractive advertising for this type of event.
