Arcadia University in Glenside inaugurated its 22nd president recently, naming Dr. Ajay Nair to the position.
The inauguration was attended by hundreds of faculty, staff, students, families, alumni, friends, trustees, and community members, according to an article in the Philadelphia Tribune.
Dr. Nair took as his theme for the ceremony the topic of ‘Reimagining Our Higher Education Community: From Inclusion to Justice’. He discussed the challenges facing institutions of higher education today, and called for an end to what he described as the “exceptionalist mentality,” saying there is now widespread mistrust of universities and colleges.
However, Dr. Nair sees an opportunity to find solutions to these problems by encouraging students to do better, making sure all students have their needs met rather than just a few, and redefining the place of higher education in the USA today. Representatives from over 50 institutions of various kinds across the country came to the celebration, which lasted a week and marks a new beginning for Arcadia, which is now 165 years old. Speakers included Arcadia officials, as well as state and local government officials such as Art Haywood, a Pennsylvania state senator; Helen Gym, Philadelphia Councilmember at Large; and Dr. Valerie Arkoosh, the Chair of the Montgomery County Board of Commissioners.
