Local fire teams to benefit from state grants

The Pennsylvania Fire Company and Ambulance Service Grant Program is providing $215,000 to supplement the budgets of 16 Butler County fire departments.

The announcement of grants provided to the 11th Legislative District was made recently by Rep. Brian Ellis. The City of Butler’s fire department was included in those receiving grant money. According to its fire chief, Nick Ban the department will use the $14,284 it receives to supply firefighters with air bottles and to acquire rescue equipment to be used for car accidents.

In order to receive a grant, a department must first apply and provide details of how they would use the money. It has only been in the past three years that paid fire departments have qualified to apply for these grants, and the change in eligibility requirements is hoped to make Butler’s firefighters’ jobs much easier.

By law, only volunteer fire departments in Pennsylvania are allowed to conduct fundraisers. This had put paid fire departments at a disadvantage when the money they had been allotted did not stretch to cover all their needs and they had no way of accessing more funds.

Both paid and unpaid fire departments have multiple uses for Print company products. Brochure printers can be used to inform the public about fire prevention, as well as outline the responsibilities and challenges with which the department must deal.
