A group of students from the Butler area recently decided that they wanted to do something to help make their world a little bit more “green”.
A group of kids at the South Butler Intermediate Elementary School made a plan to help reduce the amount of food waste that ends up in landfills. They set up a system to make it easy for their fellow schoolmates to throw away organic waste by putting it into compost bins. From there, some will go to a garden at the elementary school, while the rest may be used as a feed for farm animals in the local area. Banners can be hung up to help spread the word about the program and encourage other schools to set up similar systems for themselves.
The 10 students who undertook the task are part of the school’s gifted program. They got the idea while doing research for a presentation that was part of its ‘Ag Day’, which was held in September. They gathered statistics about the amount of food scraps and other organic waste that ends up in landfills, and presented these numbers to their fellow pupils and the staff as well.
Once they had their plan, they worked with Pam Osche, who is their teacher, as well as Richard Cavett and the food service committee for the district, all of whom helped them take their idea and make it a reality.Get a Free Quote for Banners
