Zoo asks community to eliminate plastic

Oklahoma residents are being asked more environmentally conscientious for July.

The Oklahoma City Botanical Garden and Zoo is challenging the community to participate in the international challenge Plastic Free July. For years, disposable plastic items such as coffee cups, straws, and grocery Bags have been polluting bodies of water and aquatic ecosystems like oceans, rivers, lakes, and streams.

The zoo's team for the challenge, which consists of 145 members, are the 12th best out of the 633 aquariums and zoos around the planet participating. The object is to get the most eco-points by the end of July. Teams earn eco-points by recycling, reducing the amount of plastic they use, opting for reusable items, and promising to effect more changes that will protect the environment.

According to the Conservation and Science Curator of the Oklahoma City Zoo, Rebecca Snyder, multiple small changes can create major improvements. For example, it may not seem like a lot for a single person to not use a straw or bring reusable bags to the grocery store, but multiple people doing the same things will have a significant impact.

Publicizing the risks involved with using disposable plastic items, and encouraging people to advocate for the environment, is the ultimate goal of the challenge. The Oklahoma City Zoo agrees wholeheartedly with the mission of Plastic Free July. Brochure printing is an effective way of teaching the public about environmental conservation.
