Edmond resident David Rhodes won the Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon for the men's division at the end of April.
He started the 26.2 mile race at 6:30 am and finished at 9:09 am, giving him a time of 2 hours and 39 minutes. Second place finished 40 seconds after him. He was hoping to drive the marathon course in order to become familiar with it but he was not able to. However, he trained each day before going into the office.
When he was 15 miles into the course, he accidentally missed a turn, but was alerted by the crowd, who put him back on course. This is a common mistake in marathons, with previous women's record holder Camille Herron having gone off course in the past.
Her husband, Conor Holt, was amazed that an orthopedic surgeon in his late 40s could run a marathon in under six minutes. Rhodes was also amazing and baffled by coming in first place, and that it was humbling to win.
In his neon green and yellow clothes, Rhodes staggered beyond the finish line. The last few miles had been painful. He said it took all he had to finish at all. He remembered feeling similar on other runs and it motivated him to continue.
