As the new school year gets underway, Oklahoma City is set to have its largest enrollment in pre-kindergarten the district has ever seen, with more than 3,500 more students.
In total, 30 pre-kindergarten classrooms were added this year to ensure schools could fit in all of the new students. Marlene White, a pre-kindergarten teacher at Rockwood elementary, mentioned to Koco.com that she is looking forward to the influx of young students and their parents, while Oklahoma City Public School (OKCPS) early childhood education director Pam Hibbs expressed the same zeal, adding that getting students into school early helps prepare them for kindergarten academically.
OKCPS' pre-kindergarten program runs for the full day and is free and on a first-come, first-served basis for enrollment. Schools in Oklahoma City are the only ones in the nation that have free pre-kindergarten for the full day other than one school in New Jersey. If a parent can transport their child to school, they have the opportunity to enroll them in another school if their local school is full.
