Oklahoma City to be home for new Mexican consulate

To expedite services to its citizens in North America, the Mexican government has decided to add two additional consulate locations, one of which will be located here in Oklahoma City.

The announcement was made by Mexico’s Secretary of Foreign Affairs Marcelo Ebrand, who cited a pandemic-induced backlog of services and the need to adjust to the Mexican community’s demographic changes as the reasons for new and modified consulates. It was also announced that an increase in the availability of mobile consulates is intended as well.

The offices assist Mexican citizens with employment, property, and identification documents, often printed with impressive Letterheads. At present, there are over 106,000 members of the Mexican-American community in Oklahoma City and growing. Previously, Mexican immigrants living in the state have had to travel to Arkansas to obtain the services of a consulate.

So far, a location has not been selected for the city’s new consulate, as several diplomatic challenges must be dealt with first. Most prominently the Mexican embassy located in Washington, D.C. will need to petition for the necessary authorization from the U.S. Department of State before the new consulates can commence operation.

In total, 11 honorary consulates are located in Oklahoma, which entails an American citizen who can perform consular services with permission of a foreign government. The proposed Mexican consulate will join the Consulate General of Guatemala, giving the city two diplomatic missions.
