Work has been underway in Oklahoma City with the interior demolition of its former convention center and now the exterior demolition is slated to begin.
While onlookers may have assumed the project of clearing the former Myriad Convention Center for the new arena have been on hold, in actuality the interior prep work for the total demolition has been proceeding. According to the city’s MAPS program manager, David Todd, workers have been busy removing recyclable materials along with all combustible items for several weeks.
The acronym MAPS stands for Metropolitan Area Projects Plan and is municipal capital improvement program that extends over multiple years and covers a number of interrelated and defined capital projects.
The next step, the removal of the convention center’s 30-year-old, 145-foot-long pedestrian skybridge, will precede the demolition of the convention center proper. Following the felling of the skybridge, the center’s north wall be targeted with mechanical methods being used to force the walls inward so as to avoid damaging nearby infrastructures. Of particular concern is the OKC Streetcar line.

Although the exterior demolition has just begun, street and transit disruptions have already started and will likely continue in various Forms throughout the project. Demolition of the Myriad Convention Center is anticipated to continue into late 2025.
