Oklahoma City’s Mick Cornett has joined five other mayors to discuss cooperation in the transit system. They all signed an agreement to work together in the future at Santa Fe Station on December 1.
The mayors hope to install more diverse Forms of public transportation, such as express buses and commuter rail. Cornett commented on how separate each city is in its transit system. Next year, cities will discuss how the updated transit system will be funded.
Each city will spend $511,000 on a Regional Transit Authority (RTA) task force, which will form in the next few months. Within the next three years, the RTA is estimated to cost just over $2m. Cities in Oklahoma can ask for the opinion and funds of voters for transportation services crossing city and county lines per The Oklahoma Legislature.
Association of Central Oklahoma Governments Board of Directors chairwoman Elizabeth Warner believes that population of the Oklahoma City metropolitan area will increase by half a million residents within the next quarter of a decade. She believed that the meeting with the six mayors was a chance to look at the past, present, and future of the city.
