Cherokee program spreads to Oklahoma City

‘Osiyo, Voices of the Cherokee People’, hosted by the Cherokee Nation, will be broadcast in Oklahoma City.

The half-hour program, presented in the style of a magazine, had successful runs in Joplin, Fayettville, Tulsa, and several areas included in the network of the First Nations.

According to Bill John Baker, the Principal Chief of the Cherokee Nation, thanks to the success in other areas it was only natural to spread the program to Oklahoma City.

‘Osiyo’ means ‘hello’ in Cherokee. As the name of the program, it is meant to welcome people into learning about the culture, including history, important places, and people of Cherokee heritage.

Jennifer Loren, former Griffin Communications anchor and award winning journalist, hosts the show on Sundays at 9:30 am on KOCB. Loren stated that the Cherokee story is not well known enough. She has traveled around the area searching for diverse experience Cherokee citizens have had.

More than 300,000 people are part of the Cherokee nation, making it the largest Native American tribe in the US. Many live in the city or the metropolitan area.
