The Common Wealth Kitchen Incubator, a business incubator in Youngstown, recently organized a food swap.
The swap was held at the Lake-to-River Cooperative, a member-owned cooperative of producers, farmers, buyers, and processors who grow and market nutritious, healthy foods to local families and institutions. People went there to shop for groceries, but no money changed hands.
People brought homegrown vegetables and fruits, along with jams and breads, which they swapped with other growers and food producers. The goal of the event, according to people at the incubator, was to help the people at the event become owners of their own businesses, by helping them find their strengths and weaknesses.
Melissa Miller, the incubator's resource manager, said people needed to identify what they do well, whether it's growing vegetables or baking things that are scrumptious. From that, they can decide if they could make a successful business pursuing these interests.
Miller added that the event might help some attendees clarify their thinking, or decide on the design of Business Cards or similar matters.
Still another goal of the swap was to promote the production of foods in the local area. The co-op will host similar swaps in future.
Event organizers could work with a poster printing company to create colorful display Posters to place throughout the area, announcing the next event.
