A selection of people from Youngstown went over to Cleveland in order to learn about a project that could be implemented back home.
BoxSpot in Cleveland is an incubator created for young businesses. It is located on a retail business site that was made using shipping containers. The seven units on the site are home to several small businesses that community members are able to access with ease.
James Oliver, the First Ward Councilman for Youngstown, is leading an initiative to develop a similar establishment in Youngstown that will promote entrepreneurship, education and engagement with the community. Poster printing could be used to identify a site where works are planned.
Oliver made the trip to Cleveland with representatives from the Youngstown Neighborhood Development Corporation, the city of Youngstown, SMARTS Community Art School, the Economic Action Group, and the Choffin Career and Technical Center. Joy Johnson from the Burten Bell Carr Community Development Corporation gave details about how the company was able to transform shipping containers into storefronts for retail businesses. The goal was to create a retail space located within the neighborhood so that residents have easy access to it.
Oliver’s plan for a similar site built in Youngstown would give students the opportunity to be involved in the site’s construction and maintenance so that they can develop core entrepreneurship skills and get some experience with running businesses.
