Youngstown hospital hosts day just for women

Mercy Health in Youngstown focused on women's health recently when it hosted the yearly Women's Health Day, held at the Covelli Centre.

The event included free screenings for blood sugar and cholesterol levels. Women who came to the event also got to watch free cooking demonstrations, as well as experiencing relaxation massages, and taking fitness classes.

This is the twelfth year Mercy Health has devoted a day to women and their health issues. According to Mercy Health's Mary Ann Cashier, the organization hopes to keep holding the event, and is currently planning to repeat the health day next year, in the same place, at the same time.

For the first time this year, the event had an “ask a doc” station. Women who visited the location were able to talk to physicians about their medications and other common health problems.

Women's health issues have not always received serious attention, yet women have many difficulties that should be addressed. For instance, over one third of all women over age 20 are obese, and more women seek help for depression. Health fairs like the one in Youngstown give women a starting point to look after their own health.

Mercy Health could build on the success of this event to prepare for next year, by working with brochure printers to create a booklet about women's health, and the advantages of attending the event.
