Youngstown gets its Christmas tree

A Christmas tree, measuring 16 feet in diameter and about 40 feet in height, arrived in downtown Youngstown around 11:00 am on November 17, ushering in the holiday season.

Ron Nanosky, who founded and owns Geisler Insurance in Poland, Ohio, donated the tree. For their generosity, Nanosky, his family, and members of his agency will be honored at the ceremony that kicks off the season.

That ceremony is a tree lighting in conjunction with the 2016 Youngstown Holiday Parade. The parade is slated for December 2, beginning at 6:00 pm. The tree lighting will follow at 7:00 pm, and a rumor coming from the North Pole says that after the lights are lit, people will be able to take photos with Santa. Before the evening’s fun starts, holiday vendors, food, caroling, and other family-friendly activities will take place on Central Square, starting at 4:30 pm.

In addition to these events, downtown merchants are coordinating other activities. Among these are a Youngstown Phantoms hockey game, and free admission to OH WOW! The Roger and Gloria Jones Children’s Center for Science and Technology. Suzie’s Dogs and Drafts is hosting Dueling Pianos, and the DeYor Performing Arts Center will be the site of Youngstown’s Flea’s Holiday Flea.

Events like this can be enhanced if organizers work with flyer printing companies, which can create handouts listing times, types, and places of various activities.
