The Youngstown State University Board of Trustees recently approved two new degree programs: a Bachelor's in Early Childhood Intervention, and a Master's in Nurse Practitioner.
It also established five so-called Centers of Excellence. The university's provost and VP for Academic Affairs, Martin Abraham, said adding these courses and establishing the centers are indicative of YSU's desire to respond to its students’ needs, as well as those of the community.
Each of the five centers will focus on a different discipline and will receive a total of $500,000 from the university. The Center of Excellence in Materials Science and Engineering concentrates on developing various materials for education, practical applications, and basic research, while the Advanced Manufacturing Research Center considers advanced technologies such as robotics.
Various business activities are consolidated in the Williamson College of Business Administration center of Excellence in International Business, and the Center for Sports Medicine and Applied Biomechanics focuses on research in the sports medicine field. Finally, the Centofanti Center for Health and Welfare for Vulnerable Populations serves those impacted by discrimination, poverty, illness or disability throughout the area.
The newly-approved Nursing program will provide registered nurses with the experience needed to manage patients in various settings, while the Bachelor's degree for Early Childhood Intervention reflects the fact that teachers today must be prepared to help special-needs children.
