This year, 85 butterflies were released into a wooden enclosure measuring some 640 square feet at Youngstown’s annual Butterfly Festival event.
The butterfly habitat is enclosed, and is also wheelchair-accessible, and features box gardens holding Arizona apricots, Russian sage, and other plants, and a ceiling of netting that offers some shade.
Held at the Southside Community Garden, the yearly event draws both adults and children from throughout the area to enjoy these colorful insects.
Lois Martin-Uscianowski, founder and director of the garden, released four species of butterflies at the event: black swallowtails, morning cloaks, painted ladies, and monarchs. Martin-Uscianowski conducted a casual “release service”, in which she walked slowly through the enclosure, letting one or two insects at a time go from the transparent Envelopes in which they were held. The envelopes held dry ice, which helped the insects survive, since butterflies are cold-blooded insects, according to Martin-Uscianowski.
Before the butterflies were released, several volunteers led tours of the enclosure, as well as adjacent flower and vegetable gardens. Recycled tires held some of the plants.
The gardens are planted with items such as winter squash, sweet potatoes, corn, and even sunflowers, and there are two rows of bench seating in the vicinity, inscribed with positive sayings such as “self-control” and “joy”.
