Renovations of former Carmelite Monastery completed

The Youngstown Neighborhood Development Corp. (YNDC) has recently announced that the renovation of the Carmelite Monastery, which it purchased in 2019, has been completed.

Last year, at the request of a monastery estate trustee Cece Bersch, YNDC acquired the Carmelite Monastery, even though it was unclear it they would with it. It took some time to decide but eventually it was agreed to turn the structure near Mill Creek Park into a neighborhood action center for the YNDC. Additionally, the top floor was to be made into three apartments.

In August, the $250,000 project was started on the monastery and is now finished. Earlier in the year fundraising for the renovation began and $80,000 was raised. YNDC expects the rest of the building’s makeover to come from leasing the apartment: two of which are one-bedroom units each costing $600 per month, while the third one is a two-bedroom, two-bath unit that will be let for $750.

Potential renters are already showing interest; the apartments were listed before the renovations were complete. Frequently, developers will use banner printing services to advertise upcoming rentals so as to limit the time between completion and occupancy.

As well as providing a location for the YNDC to host community meetings, other local groups such as block watches and neighborhood organizations will be able to use the monastery’s first floor as well.
