Phelps Street in downtown Youngstown reopens

The completed Phelps Street Project has brought a new look to the community and increased area foot traffic.

It took months to complete, but the Phelps Street Corridor recently reopened, which promises an increase in sales for the local business community and just in time for the Christmas shopping season. The renovated portion of Phelps Street was transformed into a pedestrian walkway, permitting dining and drinking establishments to be patronized on foot.

Notification of the closing of north Phelps Street between Commerce and Federal streets came way back on February 24. It was also announced at that time that part of Commerce Street, between Wick Avenue and Hazel Street, would close as well.

For better or worse, changes in transportation options affect the bottom line of community businesses. As a result, Print shops are frequently contacted when companies seek to make changes in their promotional strategies.

Although the work started in February, the actually planning has been underway for decades. The project, which cost $3.3m began as a sewer replacement in 1988 and evolved into the creation of a link between the Youngstown Amphitheater and downtown Youngstown.

The completion of the Phelps Street projects increases the city’s visual appeal while making it more consumer-friendly, just as the YMCA renovation, the Youngstown Amphitheater, the Erie Terminal, and the Wells Building did.
