Music event makes move to downtown Youngstown

The sixth year of the Youngstown Music Festival, which draws hundreds of attendees each Independence Day, will see a change of venue from Arlington Heights to the city’s downtown.

Lester Scott, an organizer, explained that he never thought the event that he helped to establish would grow to be as large as it is. Until this year, the annual Music Festival took place on the north side of Youngstown in Arlington Heights.

Getting the word out about an event, especially one that is changing venues, often involves the services of a banner printing service.

A neighborhood reunion is how the event began. According to Scott, he and other founders of the Festival grew up on Otis Street in the Westlake Housing projects. Holding it there was symbolic, showing they knew where they came from and the community’s history.

Local artists will perform live at the festival, a car show will be held, and food will be available for purchase. Although the customary basketball tournament will not take place during the event but will be held on another date, Scott said activities for youth will be available.

The Youngstown Music Festival will be held July 4 between N. Champion Street and Wick Avenue on East Federal Street. The free event starts at noon and shuts down at 9:00 pm. Shortly after the performances start at 4:00 pm, the car show will commence.
