The point of this project is to make sure that everyone has access to the digital world. The iPads became available to book at the beginning of March and pick ups started a week later. People who have a library card can enjoy the service for free and the iPads have to be returned after three weeks.
Libraries have always been great places to make use of digital resources. This particular library has been giving its people free Wi-Fi since 2016. Demand for access to the library’s Wi-Fi soared in 2021, with close to 1615 check outs in 2021. This is how the library knew that it was time to expand its offering. Many libraries also offer printing services to the public.
PYLMC’s Executive Director mentioned that:
“The library believes that connectivity equals opportunity, and our iPad rental program is yet another way that we are helping to close the digital divide.”
The money to purchase the new iPads, expand the reach and speed of the Wi-Fi hotspots and purchase the data plans that are pre-loaded into every rental was received in October from federal grants. The total amount received was close to $170,000.
