Kayaking course connects Youngstown residents with nature

A kayaking course for beginners is bringing knowledge and practice to Youngstown, helping area residents to better enjoy the great outdoors.

The Newbie Kayak class will begin in a few weeks. It will introduce attendees to kayaking for summer fun in the sun. Course instructors will teach all participants the basics of remaining afloat, maneuvering, and propelling the kayak in the desired direction for exploration and exercise. After learning the basics, students will explore the wetlands and the lake from a new perspective.

The course is designed for students 18 and older, but students of all experience levels are welcome to attend. Interested parties can bring their own kayaks or use one provided by the course instructors. Registered guests are encouraged to arrive 30 minutes early to sign waivers and prepare kayaking gear. Flyer printing is a commonly used method of spreading the word about such events to area residents.

The event will occur outdoors, and participants should wear sunscreen, bug spray, hats, and protective clothing. Drinking water and snacks are also recommended to remain refreshed while in the kayak. Wet shoes are also ideal for protection and comfort during the course.

Lake Newport will host the kayak course on Saturday, June 8th, starting at 11:00 AM and ending at 1:00 PM. Tickets are $30 to borrow a kayak, or $15 for guests bringing a kayak from home.
