Historic Youngstown building to become hotel

The Stambaugh Building in downtown Youngstown was built 110 years ago, and is now undergoing a renovation that will transform it into a hotel under the DoubleTree umbrella.

Developer Dominic Marchionda said walking through the building revealed the names of companies that once had offices here, such as Youngstown Sheet and Tube. Other doors and Signs identified the Federal Abstract and Title Company, T.W. Kunkel, a podiatrist, and a company called Standard Slag.

Drinking fountains that were installed when the building was built are still in place, as are radiators, and a mail chute leading from the upper floors to the lobby. Marchionda said original equipment like this will be cleaned up and left in place. A lot of the doors are solid mahogany, but they have been painted and it might not be possible to salvage them. An open staircase, which will remain in place, connects the building’s 12 floors. The building has 550 windows, all of which will be replaced, leaving views of Youngstown’s downtown. The developer plans to put a bar on the hotel’s rooftop where visitors can enjoy the city and have something light to eat.

The developer is planning a soft opening some time in December 2017, with a grand opening on New Year’s Eve.
