Libraries are increasingly including cafes or other food options, but the Public Library of Youngstown & Mahoning County’s Main Library (PLYMC) is weighting the addition of a culinary literacy center, among other possible options during planned for renovations.
Among the concepts PLYMC Executive Director Aimee Fifarek has put before the building and sites committee of the library board of trustees are a main Library café and a culinary literacy center. A $25m budget has been tentatively set for the renovation, which is anticipated to include a 4,400-square-foot addition.
Other elements of the renovation will likely include a small meeting space, expanded children’s area, event space and new meeting rooms, plus reopening the Wick Avenue entrance as the library’s main entrance. The Main Library will remain open and continue core services, while moving some auxiliary services to other branches either temporarily or permanently.
A flyer printing service is idea for informing the public when services are being relocated.
The purpose of a possible culinary literacy center would be to provide healthy eating education and the culinary side of culture, history and how it affects genealogy. Excellent culinary literacy programs are found in other cities, particularly regarding African American history.
A final budget will not be arrived at until 90% of the construction documents have been gone through by the project team. In January, 2020 the design process could be finished with construction possibly commencing during the summer.
