Council okays next phase of SMART2

Youngstown’s design review committee has given its approval to several renovation projects to be done on Front Street.

Other projects approved include putting a new sign up at what used to be Silver’s Vogue Shop and replacing the storefront at the nearby Chase Bank. Marucci and Gaffney Excavating Company has been tasked with carrying out the renovation work. According to the company, several plants, trees, trash cans, and a bicycle pump will be placed once the project is done.

The contractor started working in December and traffic on the street has been restricted since then. Work on the stretch between Vindicator Square and South Avenue should be completed in October. When the entire project is finished, the traffic lanes on the street will be reduced from three lanes to two going in each direction. The street will also have streetscaping, a bicycle path, energy-efficient lighting, and improvements to the sidewalk. Brochure printing could be used to share more details about the project.

The work on Front Street is part of the SMART2 Network program. The program started in 2020 with the redevelopment of Fifth Avenue. The budget for this project was $7m. The entire project is worth $27.65m and it includes work on South Phelps Street. The final phase of the SMART2 project will start next year with improvements being made to sections of Rayen Avenue and Federal Street.
