Butler Institute features Gallo exhibit

The work of contemporary impressionist painter George Gallo is on display at the Butler Institute in Youngstown.

The exhibit opened May 1, and will run well into June, giving residents plenty of time to enjoy the works.

Gallo studied with Russian artist George Cherepov and discovered his best work is as a landscape artist. He paints “en plein air” – a French phrase meaning that he paints what he actually sees at the time. For example, if he paints a scene of a lake in the morning and again in the afternoon, the lake will be recognizable as the same location, but it will also look different because of the change in the light.

Gallo is also a screenwriter and director; he wrote the 1986 film “Wise Guys,” that starred Danny DeVito and Joe Piscopo under the direction of Brian DePalma.

The Butler's executive director, Louis A. Zona, calls Gallo an “American original” whose work embodies the principles of the French impressionists, but adds distinctly modern touches. Zona goes on to say that Gallo's paintings “celebrate the American landscape” in the way 19th-Century painters of the Hudson River School of painting did.

The Gallo exhibit is now open and runs through June 12. The institute is already selling Catalogs and could also create festive Banners to hang outside announcing the Gallo show.
