A landmark and favorite haunt for Youngstown residents on Belmont Avenue may be closing for good unless a buyer materializes by next summer.
A trip to the Belmont Avenue Dairy Queen, will unfortunately be a fruitless one now as long-time proprietor Susie Birkholtz has very recently retired. At 71 years of age, she has decided that after 57 years it’s time to hang up the keys and take it easy.
The Dairy Queen on Belmont Avenue opened in 1949, the first to be located in Mahoning County. The establishment was purchased in 1962 by Susie’s now deceased mother Eileen Roth and has remained in the family since.
There is little necessity for changing customized Stationery items when a franchise changes hands. However, taking a franchise location and opening an independent shop there means a complete overhaul of all paper products that contain the company’s name as well as a new Logo Design.
Susie Birkholtz, who owns both the building and the land, is hoping to sell the business so it can remain in operation and says she has some potential buyers; however, they must wait until approval is received from Dairy Queen. One option Birkholz might consider is selling to a party that would run the establishment as an independent ice cream shop and not a Dairy Queen.
If a buyer does not come forward by next summer, the shop will remain closed for good.
