Back-to-school event to be hosted by Our Community Kitchen

Our Community Kitchen has set the date for a community carnival designed to help residents stock up on school supplies, pantry items, and toiletries.

The carnival is more than just a giveaway opportunity; games and a cookout-style lunch will be included as well. Clowns will be on hand and Ray “Boom Boom” Mancini, a former boxing champion, will make a special appearance.

Vision screening will be provided by the Youngstown Area Goodwill industries. Back-to-school haircuts will be offered by Great Clips and a Youngstown Fire Truck will be on hand for children to explore.

Our Community Kitchen, located at 551 Mahoning Avenue, will be the site of the carnival. Opening in 2016, the 6,500-square-foot center provides onsite breakfasts, hot lunches and meals to take home. Medical services and community programs are also offered. Homeless advocate and lifelong Youngstown resident Ralph “Skip” Barone, will be serving as kitchen manager.

Many of the programs provided by both government and nonprofits agencies are underused due to the public being unaware of their existence – a situation that judicious use of poster printing could remedy.

The event takes place 10:00 am to 1:00 pm on August 10 and is free to the public. Proof of income and showing ID are not required. Our Community Kitchen will accept donations of giveaway items during the day’s event. Monetary donations will also be welcome and may be sent to Our Community Kitchen.
