Signs on I-71 point out Medina's history

Drivers traveling I-71 near Medina will now have a reminder to get off the interstate and pay the community a visit, as two ‘Historic Medina’ Signs have been posted near the exits to the city.

Southbound drivers will see the sign at the exit for state Route 3, while those going northbound will see the message at the Route 18 exit.

Main Street Medina's former director, Matt Wiederhold, said he had been trying to have the Ohio Department of Transportation put Signs on the interstate since 2003. ODOT reject the proposals at first, since its rules allow signage for single tourist sites, but not groups of buildings. However, other states allow Signs indicating areas rather than single sites, and Wiederhold would like to see Ohio do the same.

According to Wiederhold, the ‘Historic Medina’ markers are a tool for economic development, since people who do not know the area might be intrigued enough to leave the freeway to take a look. About 70,000 vehicles pass the two exits to Medina daily.

The Signs were installed in late June. The economic development director for the city, Kimberly Marshall, said she is glad the Signs were put in place before the Republican National Convention, which will bring many visitors from out of town.

Agencies like these can benefit by working with brochure printing companies, who can create Booklets of information to explain local attractions.
