Players from Medina Rugby help others in need

Earlier this month, approximately 25 Medina Rugby players showed a softer side when they cleaned the yards of residents who needed some help.

Medina Rugby is an independent organization comprised of middle- and high-school students who enjoy the physically demanding sport.

The rugby players, as well as about 15 coaches and parents, trimmed shrubs, raked leaves, brought outdoor furniture inside for the cold months, and, in some cases, winterized doors.

Kenny Miller, a Medina player and resident, said he was excited to help out, and was glad to be of service to people who could not do some of the maintenance themselves. He also enjoyed the opportunity to work with his teammates, which strengthened their ties to one another.

Mason Juka was the one who first came up with the idea of giving back. Juka, a Medina High School sophomore, was already involved with his community, but wanted to find a way to do more. His father, Tim, suggested he should talk to his coaches to see if there was interest in a day of community service. The coaches came on board immediately, and the event was born.

City and county officials, as well as Medina County United Way, provide names of those who might need help, most of whom were seniors.

Events like this can benefit when organizers work with postcard printing companies, which can create Mailing cards to help spread the word.
