In September, approximately 60 student council members from Medina High School took part in a daylong leadership conference that centered on clean water initiatives.
The students were motivated by a trip some of them made to Ecuador earlier in the summer, where they discovered how vital clean water is to everyone. They wanted to educate others about the problem.
Holly Schneider, the president of the student council, said the trip to the Ecuadorean village allowed the group of students to see for themselves the detrimental effects of drinking contaminated water. Having seen that, the students decided they want to try and make a difference in the local area, and help keep the Great Lakes clean.
School adviser Laura Calaiacovo got in touch with Cleveland Metroparks and the Alliance for the Great Lakes to launch the effort. She and her fellow adviser, Shannon Duncan, created leadership conferences featuring activities that teach about clean water and the impact of contaminated water on society.
During their outing, students helped clean up a trail at Hinckley Reservation, and learned how runoff water full of farm insecticides and lawn fertilizer impacts water flowing into the rivers that empty into Lake Erie. They cleaned up debris on the trails and removed fallen trees, and discovered that having people keep to the trails and out of protected wetlands and marshes could help curb contamination.
