Each year, the Medina County Fraternal Order of Police sponsors the ‘Shop with a Cop’ event, and this year is no different.
Soon, a caravan of police cars and other official vehicles, about 60 in all, will drive through Medina—but not to enforce the law. The police will be taking disadvantaged children to treat them to a day of shopping. There will be approximately 140 kids in the event this year.
The first stop of the day is the Blue Heron Event Center, where the kids will be treated to breakfast. After that comes the vehicle parade, then the shopping trip, followed by lunch, then time spent wrapping the presents and visits from Santa.
The children are obviously looking forward to the shopping trip, but so are the cops. According to Police Chief Kinney, the officers anticipate this event for the entire year, and are impressed by how generous the kids can be. Many buy gifts for others, rather than themselves.
Officers come from throughout the township to participate, and are paired with kids from their jurisdictions, so they can get to know each other. The entire event is funded by donations.
‘Shop with a Cop’ is set for this Saturday, December 16, with the police caravan driving through town between 9:45 and 10:00 am.
Outdoor events like this can be even more festive if officials work with a banner printing company to create seasonal Banners to decorate the route.
