At its last meeting, the Medina Board of Education heard bids for capital improvements and bus leases. The board will be voting on these proposals at its upcoming meeting.
Robert Travis, transportation manager, recommended that the board approve a proposal to lease-to-own school buses, rather than buying them outright. According to Travis, the figure would be $391,000 per year for four years, and this would cover nineteen buses. If the district buys them outright, the cost would be $440,000 per year for the same period. Leasing the buses will make the fleet “up to date and current”, according to David Knight, the Superintendent.
Jon Burkhart, Business Affairs Director, recommended two proposals that address improvements of the physical plant. The all-weather tracks at A.I. Root Middle School and Medina High School (in Ken Dukes Stadium) need to be replaced. Two bids have been received to replace the tracks, with work planned for the summer.
In addition, part of the roof of the high school also needs to be replaced. Greg Taylor, who worked on the roof at Root, suggests the board should accept a bid from Maumee's Advanced Roofing System, Inc.
The meeting to consider these measures is scheduled for April 18. Board members might like to work with a flyer printing company to create an agenda and have it available for residents, since meetings are open to the public.
