Kitten Krazy, Inc., a cat rescue organization in Medina founded by Wendy Mirrotto, recently celebrated its 5,000 adoption.
Mirrotto began her effort to save cats fourteen years ago, in an 8-by-20 space in her garage. That grew into a 4,000 square-foot shelter on Lake Road.
Celebrations commenced at the end of last month when Ainsley Culp's parents adopted a little black kitten for her. The feline had the honor of being the 5,000th fur baby to go to a forever home from the facility.
Mirrotto moved to Medina from Parma, where she had been an animal shelter volunteer. Upon arriving in Medina, she discovered there were no positions for volunteers to help homeless cats, though there was one shelter that accepted only dogs. Since she wanted to continue fostering cats, she decided to use her garage. From there, word spread, and Mirrotto quickly found herself running a shelter.
Kitten Krazy receives cats that are left with veterinarians, those their owners have had to surrender, and some that are released or left behind. When the Medina SPCA runs out of space, Mirrotto also takes its cats.
The shelter is strictly no-kill, and has only one paid employee – the manager, Debbie Andrie. Everyone else volunteers, including individuals and families who foster cats and kittens at home until they are ready for adoption. The animals are also fostered by inmates of two different correctional facilities, who Mirrotto credits with doing an excellent job of socializing them.
Organizations like this can benefit if owners and managers create Brochures to advertise the business and encourage volunteer participation.
