Medina renovates Memorial Park pool and debates rates

The Memorial Park swimming pool in Medina is being renovated, and officials of the city are discussing admission charges and various programs to be offered.

When the pool closed in 2012, the price of a daily admission was $3. It is now proposed that the rate for people from ages 3 to 59 should be $7 per day. Other daily rates would be $4 for seniors, groups, and children who are on the federal school lunch program. Admission would be free for children under two.

The city is also consider selling season passes, pricing them at $100 for individuals and $200 for families; families on the lunch program would pay half.

In order to determine the proposed prices, Darlene Donkin, the Medina Community Recreation Center Aquatics manager, studied admission prices for 10 public pools throughout Ohio. The rates ranged from a high of $13 to a low of $3, with an average of $7.30. She suggested the $7 figure to make certain the pool breaks even. Christy Moats, who is the center’s finance assistant, says they want to sell as many season passes as possible, again with the idea of covering operating costs via admissions.

Some of the other measures being considered include a babysitter class, lifeguard training, swim lessons, and exercise classes, along with a concession stand.
