A Volunteer Fair held at the Medina Library on August 29 helped people identify opportunities to be of assistance.
According to a September 4, 2015 news item, there were approximately 30 local organizations in attendance, explaining their mission and clarifying how volunteers could help in response to a perception that many people would like to volunteer, but do not know how to get involved.
Among the organizations represented were Operations H.O.M.E.S., and the well-known Habitat for Humanity. Operation H.O.M.E.S. is an organization comprised of Medina County churches that work together to provide temporary, secure, and safe housing for homeless members of the community.
Habitat for Humanity needs volunteers who have the talent and time to help eliminate the problem of substandard housing by constructing new houses. Recipients of the aid are also involved, and by helping to build their own homes, they are invested in the effort from the very beginning.
The Hospice of Medina County also needs help in many areas, from bringing pets to visit patients, to working in the thrift shop, to sitting with patients. The hospice says it has openings of literally hundreds of volunteers.
Library officials might continue this effort by working with a flyer printing company to create a mailer that lists the names and addresses of participating organizations, and sending it to residents so they have an opportunity to consider ways they can help the community.
