Medina considers selling naming rights to rec center

Medina's city council, as well as its schools, are pondering whether or not to look for sponsors who want to pay to put their names on parts of the city's recreation center.

Mike Wright, the director of the recreation center, has been discussing the possibility of selling naming rights to sections of the center, in order to raise funds to make capital improvements. The school district and the city operate the rec center as a joint venture.

Wright revealed his belief that the potential is there to raise approximately $50,000 per year by allowing companies to buy naming rights to areas of the center, including the main concourse, community rooms, the track, the leisure pool, the natatorium, and the field house.

Rights to name the entire center itself, which comprises 110,000 square feet, would not be for sale, because the community recognizes the center, which is 15 years old, by its official name.

Since the center is well established, large sums of money might not be offered for naming rights, according to marketer Mark Phelps. However, local businesses want to support local activities, and they may be the best source of funds, said Becky Parkhurst of Cleveland Clinic, which operates the Medina Hospital.

Medina officials might consider creating Brochures for Mailing to area businesses and interested individuals, inviting them to consider bidding for naming rights.
