The United Church of Christ in Medina will soon break ground to begin building an new entrance accessible to all.
The $1.25m project will replicate the church's historic sanctuary, which was built in 1882, while at the same time making it easier for visitors to access the building. The new entry will be located off the parking lot.
At present, most people come into the church via the back door, and then either have to climb up a steep staircase, or use a small elevator to get to the second floor sanctuary. The new entry will feature a spacious, two-story area where people can gather, as well as a wider stairway broken by a landing at the halfway point, a larger elevator, and a fountain.
Disabled-accessible bathrooms and a library will be located on the first floor, and renovated offices, additional disabled-accessible bathrooms, and a balcony are planned for the second floor.
The groundbreaking is slated for May 17 and will include a reception at which a ‘Dirt Cake, will be featured. The day will begin at 10.30 am, and the groundbreaking follows at 11.45 am. Members of the public are cordially invited to attend.
Church officials could work with a banner printing company to create a suitable ‘Welcome’ banner, or something similar, to hang in the new entry.
