What's Happening in Medina, OH…

Medina buzzes about public art

As cities across the United States look to beautify downtown areas and pique residents' interest in their community, Medina has now joined the list of cities adding art to their public areas, and the city is buzzing about it, because the exhibit is a swarm of giant bees.

Medina has taken a cue from other Midwestern cities, including Cincinnati, which has pigs on its streets; Chicago, which features cows and Cleveland, which has guitars installed, to create its displays. The city commissioned 20 or more bees, each of which weighs about 65 pounds and is 5 feet by 3 feet, and painted by Medina artists.

On Thursday, August 22, some of the bees were put in place at Root Candle, and residents got their first look at the artworks. Jeanne Hurt, from Medina City Schools, noted that the bees were all different, and very colorful. Medina Hospital and Root Candle were co-sponsors of the art project, and each gave $5,000 to it. Other organizations and companies in Medina that pay a fee will have a bee installed at their place of business for a period of three months.

The bees are helping raise $10,000 for the Medina City School Foundation, an organization that provides tutors at the high school level, as well as classroom grants for children. The Foundation is separate from the city's school district.

Medina could work with brochure printers to create a pamphlet for residents and visitors alike, listing the locations at which the bees are installed, and who painted them.
