Grant to help students seek out their skills

In order to help Medina County's young people, Medina Hospital has awarded a grant to United Way of Medina County.

The grant money, a sum of $5,000, will help defray the cost of using an online assessment tool. The assessment will allow students in the county to identify their talents and skills before they become involved in the E4 Youth Venture, which is a United Way program.

E4 is an outgrowth of E4 Youth Summit, held last winter, at which time students from high schools throughout the county got together to discuss the problems facing today's young people. They also began to discuss solutions for some of the issues, particularly those that might impact their daily lives.

The Youth Venture program allows young people to work together to solve a problem they have identified in their community. The venture, which is a social project, is created and led entirely by young people. The goal of the assessment is to allow each student to determine which project is the best fit for their abilities and interests.

Approximately 250 students, beginning with those in the Junior Leadership of Medina County class, will take the assessment. In June, the students will present their ventures at a countywide June event, known as ‘Unity in the Community’.

United Way might work with a flyer printing company on a mailer for county residents to explain the program.
