Medina students are doing their part to help fight hunger, with students collecting more than 6,900 food items in an annual drive.
During the week of October 27, two middle schools (A.I. Root and Claggett), along with two elementary schools (Ralph E. Waite and Heritage), took part in the eighth year of Medina's Conquering Hunger Food Drive.
The theme of this year's drive was ‘To Shermanate’, so named in honor of Dan Sherman, a fifth-grade teacher at Waite Elementary, who passed away in June. Sherman had been coordinating the food drive for many years. Root eighth-grade teacher Wade Chapman called Sherman a “keystone” of the drive, who really cared about helping the less fortunate.
This year, students beat last year’s tally by more than 200 items, thanks to increased participation from staff and students. In keeping with the spirit of the drive, UPS donated the trucks to take the food to various local food banks, including those run by the Holy Martyrs Catholic Church, the Medina United Methodist Church, and the Adventists Community Service Center.
Those who organized the drive might want to keep the momentum going by working with a flyer printing company on a publicity-generating item to be mailed next year, recapping this year's drive and urging people to participate again so as to keep beating previous totals.
