Civil War photos go on show in Medina

The Medina County Historical Society is planning an open house to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the end of the Civil War, and to display memorabilia from the conflict.

Two Medina County men are among those whose photos have been found and will be part of the event.

During the day, Steve Ball will perform music from the Civil War era, artifacts from Ohio regiments that fought in the war will be displayed, reenactors from Union Green will appear, and the surrender at Appomattox Court House will be reenacted. The star of the day, however, will be the photos of the Medina soldiers who fought in the conflict.

Historical society co-president Mary Jane Brewer said Amy Crist worked for four hours each on 94 different photos. Crist, who works for the Cleveland Institute of Art, carefully pried the photos apart and then restored them, using a microscope to see the details.

The two men who have been identified as coming from Medina County are Eben Blakeslee and Edward P. Rettig. Both died in the war.

The event is scheduled for April 18, from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm, at the John Smart house on Elmwood Street in Medina. The free event is open to the public.

Event organizers might consider working with a flyer printing company on handouts that give more information about the two soldiers.
